Bomber Command

So many years too late they tell me I’m a hero –
They’ve even built a monument to prove their words are true;
But my endless dreadful nightmares say it is not so.

We risked our lives too often as we went to and fro,
And through the lightning storms of flak our mighty bombers flew;
Now many years too late they tell me I’m a hero.

Knights of the skies seeking the dragon’s distant glow,
We let our bombs fall through the dark, the enemy we slew,
And my endless dreadful nightmares will not let me go.

The passing weeks and months destroyed our brave gung-ho,
Too many friends were lost – I was the last of all my crew.
Now many years too late they tell me I’m a hero.

‘It’s right and good,’ they told us. ‘Take heart, men, as you go.
‘Bomb their factories and airstrips, make sure they have too few.’
But my endless dreadful nightmares say it was not so.

When at last our dreadful fruit we dropped on homes below –
Ours was the raging dragon’s fire, killing the while it grew.
Now many years too late they tell me I’m a hero –
But my endless dreadful nightmares say it is not so.
