Apa . . . .After

Apa Númessë Teleri nér nehtainar;
Apa lahtanemmë i Helcë annaira;
Ap’ aranier haranyemmë nér nancarnar;
Apa hannemmë teldavë carda sára –
After the blood was shed, there in the West;
After we crossed the cruel and dreadful ice;
After we lost the kingdoms we possessed;
After we knew at last the bitter price –

Sannemmë farnë Hrestar Sinë tenya;
Tá quentemmë liyúmemmar nér tulcainar,
Nattiral’ ambar martaina ve oira,
Apa Númessë Telerinér nehtainar ::
Reaching these Hither shores we thought sufficed;
Our mighty hosts it seemed had passed the test,
Scorning the doom pronounced upon us twice
After the blood was shed, there in the West.

Tulcien aranier, Tirion hehtaina;
Accarien hrúcarë Melkoro annaica
Ríeryallo Silmarilli nauvar mapainar,
Apa lahtanemmë i Helcë annaira ::
Founding new kingdoms was our vaunted quest;
And then to take due vengeance, as a prize
From Morgoth’s crown the Silmarils we’d wrest –
After we’d crossed the cruel and dreadful ice!

Anant’ ambar hilanyë; nossi nér nehtainar;
Haldë ostor yar carnemmë sí unë nár,
Nyérenen hannemmë aneltë ammelainar,
Ap’ aranier haranyemmë nér nancarnar ::
But doom followed doom, kin slew kin thrice;
Cities we built (though hidden) were not blessed;
Sadly we saw how much we’d overprized
After we’d lost the kingdoms we possessed.

Númello Valar mentaner hossi taurë;
Levanemmë, pan nóremmar nér lantainar,
Si marimmë, lá lender ve arcaneltë
Apa hannemmë teldavë carda sára
             Apa nossimmar nér nehtainar ::
Then aid was sent from Valar in the West;
New realms we found, for much was sacrificed;
And here we’ve stayed, not gone at their behest
After we knew at last the bitter price –
                 After the blood was shed.
