The Camera

The electronic eye sees very well
When we want to catch a moment or a view –
And share with others what our words can’t tell.

.

If, looking at the river, town or fell,
We find that we’ve discovered something new –
The electronic eye sees it very well.

.

So whether it’s a sunset or a shell,
We use our camera for that urge which grew –
To share with others what our words can’t tell.

.

Perhaps we’ll make a picture we can sell,
For there are things that we can make it do –
The electronic eye sees very well.

.

I saw a flower growing in a dell,
Enlarged it to a heart of deepest blue –
To share with others what my words can’t tell.

.

It could produce a vision of a hell,
Although we’d know it was not really true –
The electronic eye sees very well
And shares with others what our words can’t tell.

.

This was written in response to an exhibition of amateur photographs at The Beacon entitled ‘Secret Whitehaven’.
